Why doesn’t my baby like tummy time?
Does your baby become unsettled or cry when you try to do tummy time with them? If so, know that you’re not alone. Tummy time is really important and has lots of benefits, but it’s also really hard work for your baby!
Their heads are very heavy in comparison to their bodies, their visual field is different when on their tummy and for babies with reflux or tummy problems, it can feel uncomfortable. It’s a full body, beneficial workout for them so it’s not surprising some don’t enjoy it!
Don’t worry, it gets easier for them with practise and there are lots of physiotherapy activities that can help make tummy time a nicer experience for everyone! Start off with very short periods and slowly build up tolerance over time. Try these tips below:
Tips:
In the newborn stage, place your baby on your chest when you’re sat reclined on the sofa. Your baby will have all the benefits of cuddles with you but may also try to lift their head to look at your face & listen to your voice. This counts as tummy time!
You can also lie your baby on their tummy along your arm and securely hold and carry them like this. Some babies might enjoy being gently rocked or walked around the room in this position.
Once your baby is able to lift their head and put weight through their forearms, try them on their tummy on a mat on the floor. You can use a rolled towel or blanket under their chest to give them some support.
Lie down on your tummy opposite your baby, so that they can still see you and hear your voice.
IMPORTANT: Your baby must be placed on their back to sleep. Tummy time must only be practised in the day time when your baby is awake and supervised. See the Lullaby Trust for more information regarding safe sleep.
